The York Neighborhood is one of the City's older areas, with many large, well-built homes on sandstone foundations. Several sandstone outcroppings, such as the one at the old Franklin School site, provide the neighborhood with distinctive landmarks. Because of its proximity to the downtown, the neighborhood is a convenient and a well liked place to live.
Despite the presence of several larger homes, the majority of the homes are small and built on smaller lots of about 4,100 square feet. This creates a rather high population density and lack of open spaces. The landscape is established, however, with many trees and shrubs. Most of the streets have curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The character is primarily single family residential in nature.
