The Columbia Neighborhood is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the City of Bellingham. The neighborhood is primarily comprised of single family dwellings. This neighborhood is known for its late 1880's to early 1900's architecture and well maintained mature landscaping. Nearly all of the lots in this neighborhood are 5,000 square feet in size. The southern portion of the Columbia Neighborhood contains a higher percentage of large homes. Some of these larger homes hold historical significance.
This neighborhood is also characterized by narrow, tree lined streets. Most of the homes in this neighborhood also have alleyways. Many of the streets have curbs with sidewalks and planting strips with trees and/or grass. Along the western border of the Columbia Neighborhood is the Fountain District. The Fountain District is a strip development of mixed commercial use located along both sided of Meridian St
Columbia Elementary School is the only school located within the Columbia Neighborhood. Columbia Elementary School is located between Utter St and Walnut St just north of Elizabeth Park. The entire Columbia Neighborhood currently attends the Bellingham School District.
